Despite Kannada receiving Classical Language status in 2008, the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada (CESCK) still lacks a dedicated facility, leading to inadequate funding for Kannada-related research and initiatives.

Responding to a query by MLC Madhu G Madegowda in the legislative council, Kannada and Culture Minister Shivaraj S Tangadagi revealed that University of Mysore (UoM) has not yet sanctioned 4.2 acres of land for the institute, contrary to earlier decisions.

Land Allocation Dilemma

Initially, CESCK was to be housed in Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion, as per an MoU between UoM and the Kannada and Culture Department. However, ongoing conservation and renovation work at the mansion has delayed this plan. Sources indicate that handing over 4.2 acres of land is still under review, and the final decision rests with the state government.

MLC Calls for Urgent Action

MLC Madhu G Madegowda called it unfortunate that the land for CESCK remains undecided, preventing necessary Kannada research from progressing. He stressed that a permanent building is essential to secure central funding, urging the state government to take immediate action.
