Tension prevailed at an elephant camp in Karnataka after a fight reportedly broke out between two captive elephants, resulting in the death of an elephant named Marthanda.

According to reports, Marthanda sustained severe injuries after being attacked by another elephant named Kanjan during a clash inside the camp premises.

Clash between elephants turns fatal

Sources said the incident occurred when the two elephants became aggressive, leading to a violent confrontation. Mahouts and forest staff reportedly attempted to separate the animals, but Marthanda suffered critical injuries during the attack.

Despite efforts to control the situation, the elephant later died due to the injuries sustained in the clash.

Forest officials monitoring situation

Forest department officials have begun an inquiry into the incident and are monitoring the condition and behaviour of the remaining elephants at the camp.

Such clashes among captive elephants are often linked to territorial behaviour, stress, or aggression during specific periods.

Concerns over elephant management

The incident has once again raised concerns regarding the management and safety of captive elephants housed in camps across Karnataka.

Wildlife experts have frequently stressed the importance of proper monitoring, space management, and behavioural assessment to prevent violent encounters among elephants
