Mysuru, NT Bureau: The iconic Dufferin Clock Tower, affectionately known as Chikka Gadiyara in Mysuru, has ceased functioning, much to the dismay of locals and visitors alike.
Situated near Devaraja Market and constructed in the late 1890s to commemorate the visit of British Viceroy Lord Dufferin to Mysuru, the clock tower has been a symbol of historical significance. Unfortunately, due to poor maintenance by authorities, it has not kept time for several months.
The clock, which once served as a reliable timepiece for street vendors, traders, and the public, holds sentimental value for many in the community. Despite modern alternatives like smartphones, locals still rely on the clock’s presence in their daily routines.
Efforts by the Devaraja Market Traders Association to alert the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) about the issue have reportedly gone unanswered. District Heritage Committee member Prof Rangaraju emphasized the need for MCC to not only repair the clock but also ensure the functioning of the accompanying fountain, a potential attraction for weekend visitors.
MCC superintendent Engineer Sindhu acknowledged that a maintenance contract has been awarded for several clock towers, including the Dufferin Clock Tower, signaling hope for its restoration.
