In a shocking revelation, Shivanna alias Papanna, a police constable posted at Hunsur Rural Police Station, has been arrested for orchestrating a honey-trap gang targeting affluent individuals. Three other individuals, including a 23-year-old woman, have also been taken into custody by the Bettadapura police in Mysuru district following a complaint by Dinesh Kumar, a cloth merchant from Kampalapura town.
The investigation revealed that Shivanna, in collaboration with other suspects and attractive women, lured wealthy men into compromising situations, captured photos and videos, and extorted large sums of money by threatening to release the content publicly.
The case came to light when Dinesh Kumar reported an incident that began on June 11, when the young woman visited his store to buy clothes and later contacted him via WhatsApp. She invited him to her relative’s house in Maradiyuru village, where she initiated romantic behavior.
While in a room together, three men barged in, assaulted Dinesh, and forced him to pose with the woman for videos and pictures. Shortly after, Shivanna and another accomplice demanded ₹10 lakh, threatening to leak the footage.
Dinesh’s brother, Mahendra Chowdhary, became suspicious when asked to deliver the money and alerted Piriyapatna police, who intervened. The accused released Dinesh, and police swiftly arrested the culprits, effectively dismantling the extortion ring.
This incident raises serious concerns about misuse of power and police involvement in organized crime, prompting calls for stricter accountability.
