Due to security concerns in Bengaluru, the fourth edition of the Maharaja T20 Trophy will now be held at SDNR Wadiyar Stadium in Mysuru from August 11 to 28, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) confirmed.
The shift follows the Bengaluru City Police’s refusal to grant permission for hosting matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, citing the tragic June 4 stampede that claimed 11 lives. The incident remains under investigation.
As a result, KSCA’s managing committee moved the entire tournament to Mysuru and has written to the Mysuru City Police Commissioner’s office seeking approval. Police Commissioner Seema Latkar stated the request is still under review and discussions with KSCA officials are pending.
KSCA has also declared that matches will be played without spectators. Only players, team owners, and accredited media will be allowed entry—similar to the arrangements made during the COVID-19 era.
The SDNR Wadiyar Stadium, though smaller than Chinnaswamy Stadium in terms of pitch availability (4 wickets vs. 10), is known for its batting-friendly surface, often producing high-scoring T20 games. The Maharaja Trophy will also serve as a crucial preparatory platform for state players ahead of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, organized by BCCI.
While the tournament loses the glamour of live audience participation, it still holds significant importance for players aiming to make a mark at the national level.
