Mysore: In a remarkable medical breakthrough, doctors at Kauvery Hospital successfully removed 861 stones from the gallbladder and bile duct of a 55-year-old woman, in what has been described as a rare and extraordinary case.

The woman had been experiencing intense abdominal pain and symptoms of jaundice for some time. Upon examination, doctors detected a large number of stones obstructing both her gallbladder and bile duct. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a surgical team decided to perform an emergency procedure.

The operation was carried out using the Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) technique—a minimally invasive procedure used to diagnose and treat bile duct and pancreatic duct issues.

During the surgery, the medical team was stunned to discover an unusually large cluster of stones packed inside the bile duct. In total, they successfully extracted 861 stones, an exceptionally rare number in such cases.

The surgical team was led by Gastroenterologist Dr. Nikhil Kumar Joge and Senior Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr. R.M. Aravind, whose coordinated efforts ensured a successful outcome.

Post-surgery, the patient responded well to treatment and was discharged the very next day, having shown remarkable recovery.

Doctors have preserved the stones for documentation, given the unusual number. This successful intervention highlights both the dangers of delayed diagnosis and the power of advanced surgical methods in modern medicine.
