Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) removed 817 tonnes of waste from 50 garbage vulnerable points (GVPs) across the city in 190 hours of work spread over 18 days as part of a special Independence Day cleanliness drive.
50 garbage points cleared in 18 days
The drive began on July 28 as part of the 80th Independence Day celebrations, with MCC targeting 80 garbage vulnerable points across Mysuru.
By August 14, the civic body had cleared 50 locations, completing more than 60 per cent of its target. Another 30 points are scheduled to be cleaned before August 31.
Officials said construction debris accounted for a significant share of the waste removed from the identified locations.
No additional funds used
MCC Commissioner MK Savitha said the drive was carried out without any additional financial burden on the civic body. Available manpower, machinery and systematic planning were used to clear the accumulated waste.
She said regular motivation of staff and a competitive working environment had helped maintain the pace of the campaign and improve the efficiency of cleaning operations.
The corporation has also decided to honour the five best-performing teams involved in the drive.
Major waste clearances recorded
The cleaning of CV Road on August 3 resulted in the removal of around 133 tonnes of waste. About 149 tonnes were cleared from the Gokulam crematorium point, while around 137 tonnes were removed from Eden Garden in Rajiv Nagar II Stage.
The largest single collection was recorded at Bhootala Maidan in Vidyaranyapuram on August 12, where around 220 tonnes of waste were removed.
Cleaned spaces to get a new look
MCC plans to complete the remaining 30 locations by August 31. Savitha said the initiative would not end with waste removal, as several cleaned areas would also undergo painting and sapling plantation to discourage fresh dumping and improve their surroundings.
Once the drive is completed, the collected waste will be segregated, according to the commissioner.
