Social Welfare Minister Dr. H.C. Mahadevappa has announced that eggs will now be provided six days a week to students in government schools from grades 1 to 10. This initiative has been made possible by a ₹1,591 crore donation from industrial entrepreneur Azim Premji’s CRF Foundation.

The minister inaugurated the nutritious food distribution programme at Maharaja College, organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy and the Zilla Panchayat. This programme is part of the state government’s PM POSHAN – Midday Meal Scheme, in collaboration with the Azim Premji Foundation.

Previously, eggs were provided only two days a week in schools. The increased frequency aims to improve nutrition among school children. According to Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, 88% of children in the state receive eggs, 8% receive bananas, and 4% receive chickpea flour chaklis. The government is also providing uniforms, textbooks, hot milk, and has recently introduced ragi malt to ensure students’ overall well-being.

Dr. Mahadevappa emphasised the importance of students reading and understanding the Constitution’s preamble during their school years. He advised students to learn it without referring to notes and to be able to explain it to others.

The minister also stressed the need for unity among all Indians, regardless of caste or religion, and encouraged progress following the guidance of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s constitution. He reminded everyone of their rights to religious freedom, freedom of speech, and the opportunity to learn about various customs and practices while maintaining a sense of brotherhood.
