On Saturday, Mysuru’s healthcare services were disrupted as doctors across government and private hospitals participated in a nationwide protest demanding justice for the rape and murder victim from a Kolkata hospital. Outpatient department (OPD) services were suspended throughout the region, leaving many villagers who were unaware of the strike to return without receiving medical care.
Emergency services remained operational, and inpatient care continued as usual. Despite this, hospitals, including KR Hospital and JSS Hospital, saw a significant impact on patient flow, with many patients unable to consult doctors. The strike by house surgeons compounded existing challenges in providing consistent OPD services.
Dr. PC Kumaraswamy, Mysuru’s district health officer, confirmed that emergency services were unaffected by the protest. The strike also extended to neighboring districts like Chamarajanagar and Mandya, affecting the wider region.
The doctors’ protest highlighted issues of protection and improved working conditions, and it is expected that OPD services will resume on Sunday at 8 a.m.
