Mysuru: Over four decades since it was first envisioned, Karnataka’s long-awaited Film City project may finally move from blueprint to reality. Originally proposed in 1980 under Ramakrishna Hegde’s leadership, the dream project has resurfaced repeatedly but remained unrealized. Now, with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah allocating ₹500 crore in the recent state budget, the project is gaining momentum—especially with Mysuru being the CM’s home turf.

According to T K Harish, Assistant Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), 110 acres at Immavu, Nanjangud taluk have been secured by KIADB and handed over to DIPR. The Public Works Department has already floated tenders to construct a boundary wall. An additional 40 acres is also being acquired soon.

Officials plan to execute the project via Public-Private Partnership (PPP), aiming to create an end-to-end facility—from shooting to post-production. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared, ensuring comprehensive infrastructure such as editing suites, soundproof studios, animation and VFX units.

Mysuru film fraternity, led by M R Rajaram, emphasized the importance of stakeholder participation—including local producers, theatre owners, and artists—to ensure the Film City addresses practical industry needs. He also stressed affordability for Sandalwood producers and the potential for tourism, suggesting permanent sets and theme parks to make it self-sustainable.

Locals and tourism stakeholders echoed the sentiment, calling the project vital for boosting employment, tourism, and local economy. With improved infrastructure and connectivity, Mysuru is ripe for this cinematic leap.
