Mysuru: At a time when Mysuru is witnessing a surge in flex boards and banners, especially to mark birthdays of political leaders, Mysuru MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar has urged his supporters to refrain from putting up such displays on his birthday on March 24. Advocating a “flex-free Mysuru,” the MP called for a shift towards more meaningful and responsible ways of celebration.
His appeal comes amid growing concerns over the unchecked rise of banners and hoardings across the city, which are increasingly seen as an eyesore and a threat to Mysuru’s heritage identity.
Appeal for responsible celebrations
In a public statement, Wadiyar made it clear that he does not wish his birthday to be marked by extravagance or unnecessary expenditure. Instead, he encouraged his followers to observe the occasion through socially responsible initiatives.
“A flex-free Mysuru is my dream. Let this change begin with my birthday,” he said, emphasising that celebrations should reflect civic responsibility rather than visual display.
He also directed that any banners or hoardings put up in his name be removed immediately, reinforcing his commitment to the cause.
Environmental and heritage concerns
The MP highlighted that the proliferation of flex boards not only defaces the city but also raises environmental concerns. Mysuru, often regarded as the cultural capital of Karnataka, is known for its heritage charm and well-planned urban spaces.
However, the increasing presence of unauthorised banners at prominent locations, including near heritage sites, has begun to detract from its aesthetic appeal. The issue has been a longstanding concern for residents and civic authorities alike.
Civic body struggles with enforcement
The Mysuru City Corporation has been facing challenges in curbing the flex menace despite issuing repeated warnings and regulations. Unauthorised displays continue to dominate key junctions and public spaces across the city.
Although penalties have been prescribed for violations, enforcement has remained inconsistent, allowing the problem to persist and even escalate in recent times.
Call for meaningful initiatives
Wadiyar urged citizens and party workers to celebrate his birthday through constructive activities such as blood donation drives, food distribution programmes, tree plantation, and other forms of public service.
He stressed that such initiatives would serve as a more meaningful tribute and contribute positively to society, aligning with the broader goal of sustainable and responsible urban living.
Conclusion
The MP’s call for a flex-free Mysuru highlights the urgent need to address the growing issue of unauthorised banners in the city. While his appeal sets a strong example, effective enforcement and public cooperation will be key to preserving Mysuru’s heritage and ensuring cleaner urban spaces.
