Mysuru: Preparations have begun in full swing in Mysuru for the 12th International Day of Yoga celebrations scheduled to be held on June 21. Known as Karnataka’s yoga hub, the city has initiated efforts to encourage wider public participation and strengthen awareness regarding the benefits of yoga through coordinated activities involving organisations, teachers and practitioners.
As part of the preparations, yoga organisations and practitioners gathered on Sunday morning to observe Sankalp Divas and discuss strategies to increase participation in the upcoming International Day of Yoga celebrations.
Participants at the meeting resolved to collectively work towards promoting yoga across the city and encouraging people from different sections of society to take part in the programmes planned for the occasion.
Sankalp Divas observed with participation of yoga groups
The meeting brought together yoga organisations, instructors and practitioners who discussed ways to expand outreach activities and encourage greater public involvement in yoga sessions.
Organisers emphasised the importance of creating awareness about the physical and mental benefits of yoga while promoting healthy lifestyles within the community.
During the meeting, participants decided to strengthen efforts to introduce more people and institutions to yoga practices in the coming weeks.
The theme for this year’s celebrations has been announced as “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom, and World Peace”, reflecting the broader objective of promoting physical well-being and social harmony.
Maha Sankalp Divas scheduled on May 31
Participants at the gathering also decided to organise Maha Sankalp Divas on May 31 in front of the Mysore Palace.
The programme will feature large-scale participation in protocol yoga sessions, with practitioners expected to perform yoga collectively as part of the preparations for International Day of Yoga.
Organisers stated that yoga instructors and institutions have been encouraged to expand participation and involve students and community groups ahead of the main event.
The initiative aims to build momentum for the city-wide celebration planned for June.
City plans yoga sessions at 120 venues
Authorities and yoga organisations have planned extensive activities across Mysuru in the lead-up to International Day of Yoga.
The city plans to conduct yoga sessions at approximately 120 venues, with instructors encouraged to begin protocol yoga training for students and participants.
According to organisers, decentralising activities across multiple locations is expected to increase accessibility and encourage larger participation from residents.
The planned sessions will also provide opportunities for newcomers to become familiar with standard yoga practices before the main event.
Organisers target participation of 1.2 lakh people
Srihari Dwarkanath said the main programme on June 21 would be held in front of Mysore Palace.
He stated that organisers have set a target of bringing together nearly 1.2 lakh participants across 120 venues throughout the city during the celebrations.
Representatives from various yoga organisations including the Yoga Federation of Mysore, Mysore Yoga Okkuta, Shri Pathanjali Yoga Shikshana Samiti, GSS Yoga, Yoga Sports Foundation and Bharat Swabhiman Trust participated in the programme.
Among those present were BP Murthy and KG Devaraj.
The upcoming celebrations are expected to further reinforce Mysuru’s reputation as an important centre for yoga and wellness activities.
