Mysuru’s iconic silk saris, woven by Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation Limited (KSIC), are in high demand among tourists and sari enthusiasts. However, with demand significantly surpassing supply, customers are increasingly facing difficulties obtaining these prized garments from KSIC outlets.
The Mysuru silk sari, awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005, was the first silk product in India to receive this prestigious tag. Despite its rich legacy of over a century, the KSIC’s production struggles to meet the soaring demand. Customers often receive advice to call ahead or visit the store in the evening to check for availability. Sharada Hegade, a tourist from Bengaluru, shared her frustration after two unsuccessful visits to a KSIC showroom.
An anonymous KSIC employee revealed that the starting price for these silk saris is Rs 18,500, yet the store is experiencing significant supply shortages. This issue has been exacerbated by the high demand during the Ashadha and Shravana months, which sees an increased surge in sari purchases. Although KSIC recently expanded its production capacity with additional looms, the gap between supply and demand remains substantial.
The KSIC currently manufactures between 300 to 350 saris daily, but this output falls far short of meeting the overwhelming demand.
