Efforts to clear two decades of accumulated waste at the Sewage Farm in Vidyaranyapuram, Mysuru, are progressing rapidly. The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has entrusted the task to a Surat-based company under a ₹75 crore project, approved by the state government last year.

The clean-up operation, which began in March, has already removed 1.5 lakh tonnes of waste. The firm employs 20-30 workers from various states, removing about 1,440 tonnes of waste daily in compliance with the MCC agreement. Workers meticulously separate plastic, metal, soil, and compost, ensuring efficient segregation and recycling of materials.

Spanning 22 acres, the site has been a contentious issue for years due to its impact on the environment and residents. Officials report that 3.5 acres of the landfill have been cleared so far, signaling significant progress in the mission.

With a timeline of 12 months, the initiative promises to transform the once-overburdened sewage farm into a cleaner, more sustainable space. Residents and environmentalists are optimistic that this long-awaited project will enhance the city’s sanitation and ecological health.
