Mysuru’s Manwant Kumar Becomes First from City to Earn IPL Contract

Mysuru’s rich cricketing legacy has seen its first-ever representative in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with all-rounder Manwant Kumar’s selection. The young cricketer secured a ₹30 lakh contract with the Delhi Capitals, marking a significant milestone in his journey from humble beginnings to the grand stage.

Humble Beginnings and Family Support

Born in Mysuru’s Srinagar area to a retired BMTC bus driver and a homemaker, Manwant’s family instilled in him the values of perseverance and hard work. Despite financial challenges, his family, especially his elder brother Hemanth, played an instrumental role in his cricket career. Lakshmi Kumar, his father, recalls how a cricket academy offering free coaching proved to be a turning point for Manwant.

The Bicycle That Powered His Dreams

Manwant’s passion for cricket began with a bicycle ride. He would travel 15 kilometers daily to practice at the Balachandra Cricket Club. Initially sharing one bicycle with his brother, their father worked hard to buy a second cycle, laying the foundation for Manwant’s cricketing future. Today, the bicycle remains a cherished symbol of his humble beginnings.

Rising Through the Ranks

Manwant’s persistence paid off as he excelled in Karnataka’s cricket circuit, representing the Under-14 and Under-16 Mysuru zone teams. His impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy led to his selection in the IPL, where he’ll now play alongside international stars like KL Rahul and Axar Patel.

A Family Triumph

Manwant’s success is a collective achievement. His father, despite setbacks during the COVID-19 pandemic, expressed immense pride in his son’s journey. “This makes all the struggles worthwhile. I believe he can represent India one day,” he said.

Manwant’s story is a powerful reminder that with unwavering dedication, support from loved ones, and the right guidance, no dream is too big to achieve.
