Mysuru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Viveka Smaraka – Swami Vivekananda Cultural Youth Centre in Mysuru on Saturday, marking the opening of a landmark institution dedicated to the teachings, philosophy and legacy of Swami Vivekananda. Developed by Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Mysuru, the centre has been built at the historic Sri Niranjana Mutt, where Swami Vivekananda stayed in 1892 before his historic journey to the United States to address the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago.
The cultural and educational complex aims to inspire young people by promoting Swami Vivekananda’s ideals through value-based education, leadership development and personality-building programmes.
Memorial at a historic site
Viveka Smaraka has been established at the premises of Sri Niranjana Mutt, a site closely associated with Swami Vivekananda’s visit to Mysuru in November 1892.
During his stay, Vivekananda participated in discussions with scholars and devotees and delivered lectures at the Sadvidya Patashala. At the time, the then Dewan of Mysuru State, K. Sheshadri Iyer, had invited the monk to Mysuru after meeting him in Bengaluru.
As the Maharaja Chamarajendra Wadiyar X and the Dewan were away when Vivekananda arrived, he initially stayed at Niranjana Mutt, then known as the Anathalaya.
Later, the Maharaja honoured him as a State Guest and extended financial assistance to support his journey to the United States, where he delivered his iconic address at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.
In a letter written from the United States, Swami Vivekananda acknowledged Mysuru’s support, stating that he owed much to the people of southern India, particularly Mysuru.
Vision for youth development
The newly inaugurated Viveka Smaraka has been conceived as a training and cultural centre for students and young people.
According to the organisers, the institution is expected to serve more than 10,000 students from educational institutions in and around Mysuru through short-term courses, workshops and leadership programmes.
The centre will focus on value education, behavioural excellence, personality development, capacity building and character formation based on the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
It is intended to become a platform where urban and rural students alike can develop life skills, leadership qualities and social responsibility.
Modern facilities at the cultural centre
The main Viveka Smaraka complex has been constructed over approximately 75,300 sq ft, while an annex building covers another 6,300 sq ft.
The facility includes a 4-D Experience Centre, exhibition hall, amphitheatre with seating for around 700 people, classrooms, conference rooms, a meditation and yoga hall, a book stall, library and reading room.
An exclusive library and reading space has also been created for students preparing for competitive examinations, providing them with dedicated study facilities.
The modern infrastructure has been designed to combine cultural heritage with educational and technological resources to engage young visitors.
Project traces its origins to Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary
The idea of creating a memorial at the site gained momentum during the celebrations marking the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
A national committee constituted by the Union Government under the chairmanship of the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh recommended establishing suitable memorials at places associated with Vivekananda’s life and travels.
Subsequently, the Karnataka Government handed over the old Niranjana Mutt premises and surrounding land to Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama for developing the memorial, while the Mysuru City Corporation undertook renovation of the historic structure.
Construction of Viveka Smaraka began with the Bhoomi Puja on July 11, 2022, under the leadership of Swami Muktidananda, Adhyaksha of Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Mysuru.
With its inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the centre is expected to emerge as an important cultural, educational and spiritual institution, preserving Swami Vivekananda’s legacy while promoting leadership, service and nation-building among future generations.
