The Uttara Kannada police have solved the case of threatening emails sent to Bhatkal Police Station warning of a bomb blast within 24 hours.
The sender, identified as Jatin Sharma from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is a repeat offender with a long history of issuing bomb threats to police stations across India. According to SP M Narayan, Sharma used the phone of Kannan Guruswamy, whom he met in Munnar jail, under the pretext of calling his wife. Instead, he emailed Bhatkal police twice on the morning of the incident—once at 7:22 am claiming a bomb was planted, and again a minute later threatening it would detonate within a day.
Police traced the device to Kannan, who revealed Sharma had borrowed it. Further investigation confirmed Sharma was already lodged in Mysuru prison for sending similar threats to the Nazarbad Police Station.
Sharma previously worked at a hotel in Bhatkal and reportedly holds a grudge against law enforcement due to past conflicts involving his live-in partner, which led to arrest and conviction in Noida. Officials say he has at least 20 cases filed against him nationwide for bomb hoaxes.
His method involved stealing or borrowing phones unsuspectingly and using them to send threats so the actual owner remained unaware.
Uttara Kannada police, in coordination with Munnar authorities, will transfer Sharma to Karwar for further questioning under a body warrant.
