Mysuru: Keeping children away from screens during summer is a challenge, especially in rural areas where structured activities are rare. To bridge this gap, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department has launched summer camps at gram panchayat libraries across Karnataka.
In Mysuru district, these camps are now in full swing, offering children engaging experiences such as bird watching, reading, painting, singing, games, and local excursions. The camps are designed with flexible timings to suit local preferences.
In Haginavalu, Nanjangud taluk, library supervisor HS Suresha shared that their camp runs from 10am to 1pm. “Children are reading aloud, exploring native games, and visiting local spots. They’re really enjoying it,” he said.
Another supervisor mentioned that their evening sessions work better, as it aligns with children’s routines. “We focus on activities that build awareness and curiosity about their surroundings,” he added.
Organizing such camps in rural areas isn’t easy. Many children visit relatives or attend village festivals during the break. Despite this, creative and interactive sessions have helped keep attendance strong.
Mysuru ZP CEO S Ukesh Kumar praised the initiative, calling it a privilege for rural children who now get to explore new skills and subjects right in their villages.
