Mysuru: A 37-year-old technician sustained severe burn injuries after accidentally coming into contact with a live 11 kV high-tension power line while relocating traffic signals on the busy KRS Road in Mysuru on Monday afternoon.
The incident occurred near the Royal Inn Hotel Junction, in front of Arcor Hotels, where major infrastructure works, including road widening and underpass construction, are currently underway. The accident briefly disrupted traffic before authorities restored normal movement.
Technician electrocuted during signal relocation
The injured has been identified as Sathish, a resident of Naidunagar, who has been working as a technician for the past 11 years. He is employed by a private firm contracted by the Mysuru City Police to relocate traffic signal systems as part of the ongoing civic works.
According to eyewitnesses, a team of four to five technicians was shifting traffic signals when Sathish climbed an electricity utility pole to pull cable lines for the new signal installation. During the operation, he accidentally came into contact with a live 11 kV high-tension power line, triggering a powerful short circuit.
A loud explosion was heard moments before Sathish fell from the pole. He suffered severe burn injuries to his torso and thighs, while his clothes were badly burnt in the incident.
Rushed to hospital for treatment
Co-workers, commuters and passers-by immediately came to his aid and rushed him in an autorickshaw to the Princess Krishnajammanni Trauma Care Centre. After receiving first aid, he was referred to the Burns Ward of K.R. Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Major civic works underway
The Royal Inn Junction at the Outer Ring Road–KRS Road intersection is undergoing extensive redevelopment, including the construction of an underpass and road widening.
As part of the project, civic agencies are relocating traffic signals, streetlights and high-tension power lines. Officials said cable-laying work was in progress to install a new traffic signal system for vehicles travelling towards KRS Road when the accident occurred.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about worker safety during infrastructure projects involving high-voltage electrical installations.
