The Karnataka government’s Yuva Nidhi scheme, aimed at enhancing youth employability through financial aid and skill training, has seen poor participation in training programs. While 1.74 lakh youths benefit from the scheme, only 40,000 have enrolled for skill development.

Low Interest in Training

Data shared by Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash R Patil in the Legislative Council reveals that as of January 2025, 31,078 youth completed training, and 9,847 are undergoing it. Despite free courses, food, and hands-on training in AI, EV technology, cyber security, and more, most beneficiaries refuse to participate.

Officials note that even after direct outreach, the response remains poor. “The government provided contact details, and we personally called beneficiaries, but the majority declined free training,” said an official.

Scheme Details & Challenges

Launched in 2023, Yuva Nidhi provides Rs 3,000/month for degree holders and Rs 1,500/month for diploma holders for two years. However, MLC Arun DS pointed out lack of coordination between universities and government agencies, leading to low awareness.

To boost participation, Pushpa Amaranth, Vice-Chairwoman of the Karnataka State Guarantee Implementation Authority, announced awareness campaigns to highlight the importance of skill training and increase enrolment.
