Br Gregory Menezes, a revered Carmelite figure in the Goa, Mangalore, and Mysore monasteries, passed away on September 29 at the age of 95. Known for his humility and devout life, Br Gregory will be laid to rest on October 1 at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Mangaluru.
Born in Kulshekar, Mangaluru, and affectionately called ‘Giga Brother,’ Br Gregory was instrumental in the growth of the Karnataka Goa Province of the Discalced Carmelites. After completing his formation, he served in various capacities across Goa, Mysuru, and Mangaluru, transforming barren lands into lush farms. His “green hand” was symbolic of his dedication to the Carmelite community.
Br Gregory’s wisdom, simplicity, and unwavering commitment earned him the admiration of the Carmelite fathers and brothers. His time with the Belgian community in Goa significantly influenced the development of the Karnataka Goa province.
In his final years, Br Gregory resided at the Infant Jesus Shrine, living a life of prayer and austerity. Despite enduring physical suffering, he never complained, and his peaceful passing on September 29, the feast of the Archangels, reflected his deep faith. Fittingly, his burial on October 1 coincides with the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, a saint known for her simple yet profound spirituality.
