Manmohan Singh, one of India’s most respected leaders and former Prime Minister, passed away at Delhi’s AIIMS hospital on Thursday at the age of 92. According to a statement from the hospital, Singh had been undergoing treatment for age-related medical issues and suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9:51 PM.
Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2004 to 2014. A distinguished economist, he was widely regarded as the architect of India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s and is remembered for his integrity, humility, and dedication to public service. Over the last few months, his health had been a concern, and he had largely stayed away from public life.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling him one of the “most distinguished leaders” and praising his contributions to the nation. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed deep sorrow, saying he had “lost a mentor and guide.” Leaders from across the political spectrum, including President Droupadi Murmu and others, offered their condolences, underscoring the profound impact of Dr. Singh’s leadership on India’s development.
Manmohan Singh’s legacy is deeply intertwined with India’s modern economic growth and political history. His tenure as Prime Minister marked a period of significant transformation for the country, and he will be remembered as a statesman of unparalleled stature. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics.
