Geet Gazaal: Wilson Kateel’s melodies to enthrall Dubai on Oct 12

Dubai: Konkani lead singers or musicians have always tasted immense fame and recognition for their marvellous on-stage performances, while the other artistes like poets and lyricists largely went unnoticed for their efforts. Lately, in other Languages like Hindi and Kannada, esteemed writers, poets and lyricists have started to get recognised on a bigger scale since the audience’s taste in entertainment has changed.

In the Konkani industry, only the legendary Wilfy Rebimbus and a select Lyricists/Composers have seen this kind of fan following and admiration from the audience. Now, however, this trend has started to change. Today’s young poets/lyricists have started to make a name for themselves, and have their own fan following. Konkani’s proud poet Wilson Kateel is one among these young artistes, who, with his moving melodious compositions, has made a niche for himself with the Konkani audience-be it in literature or music.

Newskarnataka.com, Aankri.com and Royal Institute of Music and Arts, Abu Dhabi have come together to start a new trend in the Konkani entertainment world by presenting Konkani’s Shining Star Wilson Kateel in a unique programme called “Geet Gazaal”. This programme, which is the first-of-its-kind in the UAE, will be presented on October 12 at the Indian Consulate Hall, Dubai at 5.30 pm.

During the programme Wilson Kateel will portray his life’s story through his compositions, which will be performed by famous singers from the UAE. His poems will also be enacted by Dubai’s renowned artists.

Entry for this event will be free for all, but on invitation only. All literature lovers and Wilson Kateel’s fans have been requested to collect their entry passes from the organisers. The gates are set to open at 5 pm.

About Wilson Kateel:

A boon to Konkani literature, Wilson Roshan Sequeira was born to Gregory and Benedicta Sequeira on August 31, 1980 in Kateel. Wilson is the eldest among his siblings.

After completing his schooling in his hometown, he moved to Davangere to pursue a course in engineering. His passion for movies, music and literature made him move to Bengaluru.

Currently working as the editor of Konkani Monthly Magazine “Arso”, Wilson lives in Mangaluru along with his wife Priya Sequeira and their two children. Wilson Kateel has continued to contribute to Konkani literature and, over the years, has also developed an interest in cultivation.

Wilson Kateel’s Literary activities:

Known by the pen-name Wilson Kateel, he created a new sensation in the world of Konkani literature with his poems, stories, songs, articles and other forms of literature.

Wilson’s achievements as a Lyricist:

Being a renowned and talented Konkani poet, Wilson proved himself as a most promising lyricist of Konkani albums and movies. He has written lyrics for more than 100 songs in albums and movies. A few major contributions are as follows:

Wilson Kateel’s Contribution to Kannada literature:

• Poems published in leading magazines of Kannada such as Sudha, Gauri Lankesh, Hosathu, Sangaatha and other tabloids.
• Arive Ambedkar – book which was published in commemoration of Dr Ambedkar’s 125th birth year, with 125 poems… Wilson’s poem being one of the 125 poems.
• Poem published in book which is published by Prison Ministry of India for development of prisoners.
• Kavyakadali, book of poems of famous poets of Kannada adapted Wilson’s poem.

Award and Honors:

Being a prominent Kannada and Konkani poet and Konkani lyricist, hundreds of awards and honours have been presented to Wilson Kateel.

• Several awards in Rakkno, Kittall, Uzwad, Sevak, NamanBallokJezu, Daayz magazine organized poetry competitions.
• His songs Kenna Kenna, Thembe Thembe Pavsa, Tujecch khatir won Global Konkani Music award for best Lyricist.
• Awarded with 2016 Kittal Yuva Puraskar.
• Poem collection Encounter won Vimala Pai award.
