Papa Francis encourages students entering the workforce to stay true to their values
In a message for an event organized by the Roman branch of A.C.L.I. (Italian Christian Workers’ Association), Papa Francis offered heartfelt encouragement to students about to enter the workforce. He told them, “the world is opening itself before you,” but reminded them that despite its seeming chaos, the world is in need of their unique contributions. “With you, everything, truly everything, can change,” he affirmed.
Reflecting on the theme of the heart, central to his recent encyclical Dilexit nos, Pope Francis explained that while the heart is traditionally associated with love and friendship, it is also a place for decision-making in the context of work. “Guard your heart,” he urged, as students may face overwhelming demands and expectations in their careers. He stressed that in these moments, it’s crucial to remain grounded in one’s values and not to bend to harmful pressures or actions that undermine one’s authenticity.
The Pope also encouraged the students to avoid conforming to models driven purely by social prestige or money, warning that such pursuits could lead to alienation and loneliness. To make a real difference in the world, he emphasized the importance of working together and building networks that promote a sense of shared human fraternity. True work, according to Pope Francis, is that which comes from the heart and empowers individuals to remain free, hopeful, and true to their principles.
