Parents of children riding two wheelers face huge fines
Chamarajanagar police have ramped up their efforts to curb underage driving, particularly around schools and colleges. In January alone, 74 violations were recorded, with parents being summoned and cautioned about fines and penalties reaching ₹25,000 and potential imprisonment. This district-wide operation aims to enhance road safety following mounting complaints about minors illegally riding two-wheelers.
For first-time offenders, minors are let off with a warning. However, if caught again, legal action is taken against their guardians. Authorities have intensified enforcement after noticing a rise in school students recklessly riding motorcycles and scooters. Cases have been filed across multiple police jurisdictions, including Chamarajanagar Town (14), Rural (6), East (5), Traffic and Kuderu (2 each), Santhemarahalli (5), Gundlupet (6), Beguru (9), Terakanambi (3), Yelandur, Mamballi, Kollegal Town (2 each), Kollegal Rural (9), Hanur (7), Ramapur (2), and MM Hills (4).
Kempanayaka, a resident of Ramasamudra, highlighted the rampant issue of minors, some triple riding, near Santhemarahalli Road, B Rachaiah Road, and school zones like St Francis School. He urged authorities and schools to take stricter measures while advocating for awareness campaigns to educate both students and parents on road safety and legal consequences.
SP B T Kavitha reiterated that only individuals aged 18 and above can obtain a driving licence from the RTA and advised parents against permitting minors to ride vehicles.
