Former Trinamool Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra has criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting that their recent actions indicate a desperation to recruit politicians they previously labeled as ‘corrupt.’ Moitra, who herself faced allegations of involvement in a cash-for-questions scandal and was expelled from the Lok Sabha last year, expressed her concerns on X, formerly known as Twitter. She remarked on the irony of BJP’s eagerness to embrace politicians they once condemned, humorously implying that she might be their next target.

Moitra’s remarks followed the BJP’s welcoming of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who recently resigned from the Congress. Chavan’s potential entry into the BJP fold is seen as a move to strengthen the alliance of BJP, Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde, and NCP led by Ajit Pawar in Maharashtra. His departure from the Congress has raised concerns within the party and the broader alliance, with fears that other MLAs may follow suit.

The spotlight on Ashok Chavan has reignited discussions surrounding the Adarsh Scam, a controversial housing scandal in which he was implicated. Opposition parties have pointed to the pending investigations against Chavan as a possible motivation for his switch to the BJP. However, Congress leaders like Sanjay Nirupam have attributed Chavan’s decision to differences with Nana Patole’s leadership style. Patole himself has referenced the Adarsh Scam during discussions on the economy, hinting at Chavan’s involvement.

Addressing the allegations, Ashok Chavan defended himself by citing a favorable ruling from the Bombay High Court and downplayed the significance of the scandal, dismissing it as a “political mishap.” Despite ongoing scrutiny from certain agencies, Chavan maintains that the issue is no longer relevant.
