New Delhi: In an exclusive insight into the virtual meeting of the INDIA alliance on Saturday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar initially suggested Rahul Gandhi as the chairperson of the bloc. However, Gandhi declined, citing his grassroots work and the upcoming Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. Subsequently, Kumar proposed Mallikarjun Kharge’s name for the top position, a suggestion supported by Sonia Gandhi and several other parties.

As discussions pivoted to the convenor’s role, CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury nominated Nitish Kumar, who, reportedly displeased about not getting the chairperson role, suggested his colleague Lalu Yadav as a more senior alternative. With Yadav declining, Rahul Gandhi reasserted Kumar’s name, gaining some support from other parties. However, concerns raised by Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee prompted further discussions, with Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and some Congress leaders tasked with resolving the issue.

Notably absent from the virtual gathering were key allies like Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and Uddhav Thackeray, underscoring the focus on national unity. The meeting aimed to discuss seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, with limited progress reported. Despite challenges, the parties emphasized the importance of unity at the national level to prevent state-level differences from derailing their agenda against the BJP.

In a post on social media platform X, Mallikarjun Kharge expressed optimism about seat-sharing discussions, stating they are progressing positively. He, along with Rahul Gandhi, invited all Indian parties to join the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, emphasizing its role in addressing social, political, and economic issues affecting the common people of the country. The Congress chief also mentioned the fruitful discussions on joint programs in the coming days by INDIA Parties during the online meeting of the INDIA Coordination Committee.
