Pope Leo XIV: A bridge-builder ready to steer the church into a new era
Cardinal Robert Prevost, who would become Pope Leo XIV, in October 2023, had a calm presence, attentiveness, and thoughtfulness during our brief conversation. He seemed a man who truly listens. At that time, the Vatican was in the midst of a major assembly focused on church reform, a process initiated by the late Pope Francis.
Prevost participated actively in the synod discussions, which allowed voices from all around the world—including women—to shape the final document. This open format marked a new chapter for the church. Just months later, Prevost became Pope Leo XIV, bringing a gentle yet determined approach to continue Francis’ reform efforts.
Pope Leo’s commitment to the church’s core values was evident when he pledged his dedication to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council. Emphasizing “care for the least and the rejected” and promoting “trusting dialogue,” he stands in contrast to divisive figures like former President Trump, particularly on social issues like migration and human dignity.
Known for his humility and gentleness, Leo is unlikely to initiate dramatic doctrinal changes but will take a firm stance on important global issues such as peace, social justice, and environmental protection. He’s also focused on addressing the clerical sexual abuse crisis with accountability.
Pope Leo XIV represents a modern, inclusive, and compassionate church ready to embrace the challenges of a new era.
