Priyank Kharge accuses social media platforms of suppressing critical voices on Modi
Karnataka’s IT Minister Priyank Kharge has taken aim at major social media platforms like Meta, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube, accusing them of deliberately restricting posts that are critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kharge contends that such actions are a direct attack on democratic dialogue in India, the world’s largest democracy.
In a post shared on X, Kharge expressed his growing belief that platforms such as Meta, X, and YouTube India were intentionally limiting the visibility of content that critiques PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and the BJP regime. He argued that this censorship distorts public perception by silencing dissenting voices, thus hindering a free flow of information and discussion.
Kharge further emphasized the impact this could have on public trust. “This suppression not only curtails free speech but also diminishes the democratic process by restricting access to diverse viewpoints,” he said. He stressed the pressing need for transparency and accountability in social media moderation to preserve public confidence.
These comments came in the aftermath of the BJP’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, where they triumphed over the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while Congress failed to win any seats. Kharge’s remarks also align with a broader conversation about the loss of trust in governments globally, sparked by a statement from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
