Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Monday laid the foundation stone for a ₹540-crore drinking water project aimed at addressing long-term water shortages in the Ramanagara district. The launch event was held near the Sattegala Barrage in Malavalli taluk, Mandya, where the project will draw water from the Cauvery River.

Before the ceremony, Shivakumar offered prayers at the Hirenagaradamma Temple. Speaking at the site, he emphasized that the project uses a gravity-based system to carry water from Sattegala to the Iggaluru barrage. The initiative, led by Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, will benefit four key taluks—Ramanagara, Kanakapura, Magadi, and Channapatna.

A major component of the project includes an 11-kilometre tunnel near Sattegala, which Shivakumar personally inspected during his visit. He highlighted its importance in ensuring a steady and reliable supply of drinking water.

Originally proposed during his previous stint as Water Resources Minister, the project had been delayed due to land acquisition disputes involving farmers. With those challenges now resolved through proper compensation, the Deputy CM confirmed that the project is on track to be completed by December.

During the event, locals and temple authorities raised requests for improvements to nearby roads and temple facilities. Shivakumar assured them that these upgrades would be included in the broader project scope.

Among those present were former MP D.K. Suresh, MLAs C.P. Yogeshwar and Kadaluru Uday, along with senior district officials.
