In a heartfelt and rare gesture, Varnika, a schoolgirl from Kempaiahana Hatti village in Hanur taluk of Chamarajanagar, has penned a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, pleading for help over the erratic drinking water supply in her village—despite the State’s dams being full after recent rainfall.
In her emotionally charged letter, Varnika describes how her parents are forced to walk long distances for water every day, even as they toil for work. “Even birds and animals suffer in this crisis,” she wrote, highlighting the severity of the situation.
She further noted that while many parts of Karnataka enjoy overflowing reservoirs, Ramapura hobli is reeling under a deep water crisis, with underground sources drying up. The prolonged water scarcity has already pushed villagers to abandon farming and seek alternative livelihoods.
Varnika’s appeal stands as a powerful reminder of how climate disparity and neglect of rural infrastructure can deeply affect young lives and entire communities, even in seasons of apparent plenty.
