Washington: US President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin that ending the conflict in Ukraine remains a priority and expressed readiness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire, according to the Kremlin.
The remarks were disclosed by Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov following a phone conversation between the two leaders on Sunday.
According to Ushakov, Trump reiterated the importance of ending hostilities and emphasised the need for a peaceful resolution to the prolonged conflict, which has continued to affect regional and global stability.
Trump backs diplomatic efforts
Speaking to journalists, Ushakov said Trump stressed that a cessation of hostilities in Ukraine was essential and indicated his willingness to work alongside European partners and Ukrainian authorities to facilitate negotiations.
The US president reportedly expressed support for continued diplomatic engagement and said he was prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at advancing peace talks.
The discussion comes ahead of the Group of Seven (G7) summit, where international leaders are expected to address several major geopolitical issues, including the ongoing war in Ukraine.
US envoys expected to visit Russia
Ushakov also stated that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have been involved in diplomatic initiatives related to the conflict, are expected to undertake another visit to Russia in the near future.
The proposed visit is seen as part of broader efforts to revive negotiations aimed at finding a political solution to the war.
Diplomatic attempts to secure a breakthrough have faced challenges in recent months, with multiple rounds of discussions yielding limited progress.
Iran discussions also feature in talks
Apart from Ukraine, the two leaders reportedly discussed developments concerning Iran and ongoing diplomatic efforts related to its nuclear programme.
According to Ushakov, the conversation included discussions about a memorandum involving the United States and Iran, with Trump expressing optimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement.
The US president reportedly said negotiations were progressing and suggested that a successful outcome could be announced in the future if talks continue positively.
The discussion reflects the growing international focus on multiple geopolitical challenges currently facing global leaders.
Putin extends birthday greetings
During the conversation, Putin also conveyed birthday greetings to Trump, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
Ushakov described the exchange as informal and said the Russian leader offered his congratulations during the call.
The latest communication between the two leaders comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving Ukraine, Iran and other international security issues. Analysts will closely watch whether renewed contacts between Washington and Moscow contribute to any progress in resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
