Bengaluru: Madanayakanahalli police have arrested 21-year-old Prem Vardhan in Tirupati for the alleged murder of his friend Devisri, a BBM student from Andhra Pradesh’s Annamayya district. The crime took place on Sunday in a rented room in Thammenahalli, located in north Bengaluru.
BBM student found dead after alleged argument
According to investigators, the incident occurred following a heated argument between the two. Vardhan allegedly attacked Devisri inside the rented accommodation and fled the scene immediately. Police said he travelled via Metro to Majestic before boarding a bus to Tirupati in an attempt to evade arrest.
Police track movement using CCTV and mobile signals
Officers identified Vardhan as the prime suspect based on statements from the victim’s friends and neighbours. Although the accused had switched off and later deactivated his mobile phone, intermittent signals enabled officers to trace his movements. Investigators also analysed CCTV footage from various transit points to narrow down his location.
A team led by Inspector Muralidhar coordinated with Tirupati police as they monitored tower locations to track his route.
Accused attempted to disguise himself
In an attempt to conceal his identity, Vardhan reportedly shaved his head and offered his hair at a temple. Despite this effort, his mobile activity eventually revealed his position, allowing officers to arrest him in Tirupati.
Jealousy cited as motive
During interrogation, Vardhan confessed to committing the murder due to jealousy over Devisri’s friendship with another man. Police are verifying his statement while continuing to reconstruct the events leading to the incident.
Investigation continues
Officers are now working to determine the exact sequence of events, the nature of the argument, and whether there were any prior disputes between the two. Forensic reports and digital evidence are also being examined to strengthen the case.
The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further legal procedures are underway. Police are expected to file a detailed chargesheet once all evidence collection is complete.
