Mangaluru – The traditional Samudra Puja, a ritual conducted to seek the blessings of the sea before venturing into fishing, was performed today along the scenic Thanneerubavi shoreline.

This age-old ceremony is considered an important cultural and religious practice among the fishing community. It is usually observed at the onset of the annual fishing season, symbolising respect for the ocean and gratitude for its bounty. Fisherfolk believe the ritual ensures safety at sea and a prosperous catch in the months ahead.

Early in the morning, fishermen, their families, and community leaders gathered at the beach dressed in traditional attire. Offerings such as flowers, coconuts, fruits, and incense were placed on decorated platforms near the waves. Priests chanted prayers and performed rituals invoking the blessings of the sea goddess.

As part of the proceedings, small boats adorned with colourful flags were anchored along the shore. Fishermen sprinkled holy water on their vessels and nets, marking them ready for the upcoming voyages.

Local residents and tourists also joined the celebrations, capturing the vibrant sights and soaking in the festive spirit. The event was not only a spiritual occasion but also a moment of unity, bringing together generations of fishing families.

With the Samudra Puja now complete, the fishing fleet is set to head into the waters in the coming days, hoping for calm seas and abundant harvests. The ritual stands as a reminder of the deep bond between the community and the ocean.
