A disturbing scam has been uncovered involving children begging at food stalls in Bengaluru. A local man witnessed the deception while at a stall on New BEL Road, where children often approach passers-by asking for food or money. While having golgappas and momos, the man saw a child request a plate of momos from another customer, claiming hunger. The customer, moved by compassion, asked the vendor to serve the child. However, the man later learned from the vendor that the child had already consumed five plates of momos that evening—making this his sixth.
Curious, the man visited a nearby City Supermarket and found the same child receiving a 5kg bag of rice. After questioning the staff, he discovered that the child regularly collects rice and sells it back to the store for half the price, in cash. The supermarket employees confirmed that this was a daily routine, with the child gathering more rice than a typical family of four would need.
The man, a frequent customer at both the food stall and supermarket, felt betrayed by the scam. He shared his findings in a Reddit post, expressing that while charity is important, he could no longer support these children involved in such a planned scam.
This experience opened his eyes to the organised nature of the begging operations in the area, and he has decided to stop offering assistance to these children.
