Renault recalls Kwid for faulty fuel system, hose clip

Just as the Renault Kwid has been making waves in the entry-level crossover space, Renault has silently initiated a recall of about 50,000 units of the Kwid. The model led to a steep incline in Renault’s growth curve this year, ever since it was launched last year.

Both the Duster and the Kwid made Renault a popular brand in India with which it tasted great success. Even the market leader Maruti Suzuki’s supremacy has been challenged by the Renault Kwid, while even Hyundai lost some of its market share to Renault in the entry-level hatchbacks, crossover and SUV segments.

The Kwid gave entry-level buyers a premium look, which was lacking in the segment. It also comes with an efficient 0.8-litre petrol motor to keep the economics of owning and riding at affordable levels.

The Duster did pack new age styling and designs and better quality in riding. The Kwid, on the other hand, did have more interior space and many segment-first features and equipment.

Now, the 50,000 units of the Renault Kwid that will go in for the recall had been produced until May 18, 2016.

In what can be worrying news for Kwid owners, Renault India has quietly initiated a recall for all the hatchbacks that were produced up to May 18, 2016. The voluntary recall is to ensure the smooth supply of fuel to the engine. Renault says that a fuel hose pipe clip will be added to the units with a faulty system. Post that, a full evaluation of the overall functionality will be carried out to check for any potential disruption of fuel supply. The company hasn’t shared the exact number of vehicles that will be recalled under this campaign, but has ensured that the entire process of inspecting and fixing (if required) will come at no cost to the customer. Renault India has started contacting customers to ask for a suitable date and time for an appointment.

The Kwid was launched in September 2015 in India with a 0.8-litre engine. However, in August 2016, the French carmaker introduced a more powerful variant of the little hatchback with a 1.0-litre petrol mill. While the 0.8-litre engine Kwid locks horns with the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, the 1.0-litre variant goes on to worry the K10 variant of the Alto
