New Delhi: Facebook-owned company, WhatsApp has been asked by the Union Government to have an office in India with a full-time grievance officer stationed here so that local queries can be answered.
Will Cathcart, Global Head of Facebook and India’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Law & Justice, Ravi Shankar Prasad met and discussed the Indian scenario.
The minister conveyed to WhatsApp three points of concern- an India-centric grievance officer in India to address all issues that may arise, traceability should be the company’s job with regard to terrorism and extremism and in case of a launch of payment services, the company will have to ensure that it meets all regulatory requirements.
Minister Prasad stated that his department has been instructed to encourage the company if it complies with the requirements.
The company has been told that they can bring India specific products and be a part of India’s digital revolution and a part of the $1T digital economy.
