Later this year, Apple will launch its newest iPhone 16 lineup, which is anticipated to be jam-packed with Generative AI features. Samsung and Google, two competitors with AI-enabled devices—the Pixel 8 and the recently unveiled Galaxy S24 series, for example—have advanced their AI efforts far more quickly than the Cupertino, California-based company. iOS 18 will probably include generative AI features for the upcoming iPhone. As per a recent report, Apple may be preparing the largest update in the history of the company for its upcoming major mobile operating system update.

According to a report in 9to5Mac, which cites the latest Power On newsletter from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 18 will likely be “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history.” iOS 18, codenamed Crystal, will reportedly bring “ambitious changes,” in addition to new AI features.

“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history. With that knowledge, Apple’s developers conference in June should be pretty exciting,” Gurman reportedly said in his newsletter. Earlier this month, Gurman had reported that Apple would likely announce iOS 18’s AI offerings at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

Although Apple hasn’t revealed much about the generative AI features that will be included in iOS 18, there have been rumors circulating that Siri, the iPhone’s on-device assistant, will undergo a significant AI makeover. Apple’s Large Language Model is anticipated to power the redesigned Siri (LLM). AI capabilities like enhanced text suggestions, playlist creation, and music recommendations may also be added to other apps like Apple Music and Messages. Gurman had stated in October of last year that AI-based updates might also be coming for Apple’s productivity suite of apps, which includes Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

Over the course of the next year, Apple is expected to spend about $1 billion (roughly Rs. 8,300 crore) developing AI features for its devices. Gurman had stated back in November that since the iPhone 16 series won’t see any significant hardware improvements, iOS 18 will need to be “extra impressive.”

Samsung, a competitor of Apple, recently unveiled the Galaxy S24 series, which is a flagship line of smartphones with Galaxy AI features like Note Assist, Circle to Search, Live Translate, and more. Using Google’s Gemini AI model, the South Korean manufacturer has teamed up with the tech giant to bundle AI services with its most recent phones.
