Google has revealed that new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered updates to Google Maps will be available soon with the goal of assisting users in finding new locations. According to each user’s unique needs, the most recent generative AI feature will provide personalized recommendations. To generate travel recommendations, it analyzes over 250 million locations on Google Maps and contributions from over 300 million users using large language models (LLMs). This week, a few US Local Guides will get access to Google Maps’ generative AI feature.

Ownership by Alphabet Google announced the addition of a new generative AI feature to Google Maps on Friday, February 2, via a blog post. With the new tool, users will have more help discovering new locations and receive personalized recommendations based on their individual requirements. In order to provide prompt travel recommendations, the new feature will use large-language models (LLMs) to analyze Maps’ comprehensive data on over 250 million locations and reliable insights from a community of over 300 million contributors.

Select Local Guides, who voluntarily contribute reviews, photos, answers to questions, check facts and more on Google Maps, in the US can avail of the generative AI feature this week. A wider rollout of the new capability will take place after receiving feedback from these active members of the Google Maps community.

In the official announcement post, Google provided a few instances of the generative AI search feature in action. Users can ask Maps what they’re looking for, such as “places with a vintage vibe in SF,” and the AI models will analyze Maps’ information about nearby businesses and places along with photos, ratings, and reviews from the Maps community to make recommendations. For example, if a user is visiting San Francisco and wants to plan a few hours of thrifting for unique vintage finds.

Additionally, users will see results organised into categories along with photo carousels and review summaries. The conversation can be continued with follow-up questions like “How about lunch?” and the AI feature will suggest places matching the interests of users. Google claims the AI-powered feature will help in easily discovering places and exploring the world with Maps.
