Sarasota: At just 13, Aniket Sarkar is exploring an unusual answer to a serious agricultural challenge — capturing water from the air to help farmers facing shortages.

The seventh-grade student from Pine View School developed a low-cost atmospheric moisture capture system designed to collect water vapour from the atmosphere and turn it into liquid water for crops. His project has earned him a place among the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalists.

A simple idea tackles water shortage

Aniket’s interest began with the challenges faced by farmers in dry and increasingly arid regions of the American Midwest and West. His system uses simple materials to explore whether moisture present even in dry air can be recovered for agricultural use.

According to reports on his prototype, his initial model used a plastic bucket, copper coils and a pump. He later added a fan, additional copper coils and insulation to improve airflow and condensation. The upgraded prototype reportedly collected almost twice as much water as the first model.

A young mind thinking about the future

Aniket’s interest in science developed through rocketry, robotics, STEM fairs and 3D printing. He hopes to become an environmental engineer and work on solutions to climate and environmental challenges.

His project does not claim to solve agricultural water shortages on its own. Instead, it demonstrates how a young student’s curiosity can develop into an early-stage scientific idea addressing a real-world problem.

By turning an everyday observation — that even dry air contains moisture — into an experiment, Aniket is showing how innovation can begin with a simple question and grow into a meaningful idea for the future.
