With summer’s sweltering grip tightening, animal activists and bird enthusiasts in Prayagraj and Pratapgarh districts have kicked off a unique campaign to safeguard birds and stray animals. Marking World Sparrow Day, they’ve begun installing “bird restaurants”—special feeding and watering stations—on tree branches across over a dozen villages, including Mandhata and Holagarh blocks.

Activist Ajay, leading the initiative, highlighted that rising temperatures and dehydration pose a significant threat to birds and strays alike. “These iron-rod bird restaurants, placed under shady trees, offer water, grains, and enough space for birds to rest and survive the scorching heat,” he explained.

The movement has rapidly gained momentum, with not just animal lovers but also police personnel and local citizens contributing to the effort. Villages such as Saherua, Sansarpur, Bhawanipur, Gadwara, Tarapur, and Patel Nagar already have several of these structures in place. Organizers plan to set up thousands more over the next two months to provide relief in both urban and rural pockets.

Animal welfare advocates are also urging residents to care for pets during this harsh season. Rajul Bhargava advised keeping pets indoors during peak heat hours, lowering protein intake, and adding cooling foods like curd and mint. For strays, simple clay or cement water bowls and zero-cost shelters made from unused sheets are recommended.

Residents like Anjali are taking precautions, ensuring pets stay cool, hydrated, and safe.
