Four decades after Rakesh Sharma famously quoted Saare Jahaan Se Accha, astronaut Sunita Williams marveled at India’s beauty from space, especially the majestic Himalayas. Reflecting on her 286-day mission aboard the International Space Station, she described the view as “amazing, just amazing.”
A home away from home
Williams, deeply connected to her Indian heritage, was captivated by India’s diverse landscape. From bustling fishing fleets along the western coast to the glowing networks of city lights at night, the country’s vibrancy was unmistakable. “The Himalayas, the colors, the ripple effect from plate collisions—it’s incredible,” she said.
India’s rising space presence
Excited about India’s growing role in space exploration, she praised ISRO and celebrated the upcoming Axiom mission, featuring Subhanshu Shukla, an IAF test pilot and ISRO astronaut. “He will be India’s hometown hero aboard the ISS,” she remarked.
A long-awaited return
Williams also expressed eagerness to visit India. Her co-traveler, Butch Wilmore, jokingly insisted on tagging along. “You might stand out a bit, but we’ll prepare you for spicy food!” she laughed.
Having faced an unexpected delay in space, the duo finally returned on March 19 aboard SpaceX’s Dragon. Yet, Williams’ fascination with India—both from space and on Earth—remains boundless.
