NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Space with Smoked Turkey
Indian-origin NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is set to mark this year’s Thanksgiving on the International Space Station (ISS) with a festive meal including smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry, green beans, and apple cobbler. In a video message shared by NASA, Williams and her crew expressed their gratitude, wishing a Happy Thanksgiving to friends, family, and supporters on Earth.
Williams, along with fellow astronauts Butch Wilmore, Nick Hague, and Aleksandr Gorbunov, plans to celebrate the day by watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and enjoying a special meal prepared by NASA. The crew has been provided with festive food items, including butternut squash, apples, sardines, and the smoked turkey.
In June, Williams and Wilmore made history by becoming the first to ride Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, although what was intended to be an eight-day mission has extended to eight months due to Starliner being deemed unfit for human travel. Williams is now expected to return to Earth in February 2025 aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule.
During her time in space, Williams celebrated Diwali from 260 miles above Earth and has spent a total of 322 days in space. She is also the second woman astronaut with the highest number of spacewalks.
