Numaligarh : Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has successfully produced second-generation (2G) ethanol at its bamboo-based plant, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to develop alternative feedstocks and value-added products.

NRL Chairman Ranjit Rath said the unique plant has successfully produced ethanol and that the company is now looking at opportunities to develop derivatives such as acetic acid from the production process.

Bamboo-based technology gains importance

The 2G ethanol project is significant because it uses lignocellulosic biomass rather than conventional food crops as its feedstock. Bamboo, which is abundantly available in parts of the Northeast, has emerged as an important potential resource for producing biofuels and other industrial products.

Unlike first-generation ethanol, which is generally produced from sugar- or starch-rich agricultural commodities, second-generation ethanol can be produced from non-food biomass. This makes the technology particularly relevant to India’s efforts to expand renewable fuel production without placing additional pressure on food resources.

NRL’s bamboo-based project therefore combines the development of renewable energy with the potential utilisation of locally available biomass.

Company explores value-added derivatives

While ethanol production remains an important objective, NRL is also examining ways to extract greater economic value from the technology.

Rath said the company is looking at derivatives such as acetic acid. Acetic acid is an important industrial chemical used in a wide range of applications, including the production of polymers, coatings, solvents and other chemical products.

The development of such derivatives could help move the project beyond fuel production and towards a broader biorefinery model, in which biomass is converted into multiple commercially useful products.

Such an approach could potentially improve the economic viability of advanced biofuel facilities while encouraging greater utilisation of renewable raw materials.

Potential boost for Northeast’s bamboo economy

The use of bamboo as the primary feedstock also gives the project a wider regional significance.

The Northeast has substantial bamboo resources, and increased industrial demand could create opportunities for farmers, growers and other participants in the bamboo supply chain. A commercially successful bamboo-based ethanol industry could potentially support rural livelihoods while providing a renewable source of industrial raw material.

Advanced biofuels such as 2G ethanol can complement conventional ethanol production by opening up additional feedstocks.
