Activists of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a protest in front of the Shivamogga City Corporation office on Wednesday, alleging inaction by health department officials against the use of synthetic colours and tasting powder in hotels and food stalls across the city.
Allegations of harmful food additives
The protesters said the use of artificial colours and tasting powders, which are harmful to health, is prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards Act. They alleged that despite clear government bans, many eateries continue to use these substances in food preparation, exposing the public to serious health risks.
According to the activists, prolonged consumption of such additives can lead to severe health complications, including cancer. They expressed concern that authorities were turning a blind eye to the issue, allowing unsafe food practices to continue unchecked.
Rising number of roadside eateries
NSUI leaders pointed out that in recent days, non-vegetarian hotels, chaat stalls and small food carts have mushroomed across Shivamogga, with many operating on footpaths and roadside spaces. They alleged that food sold at these outlets often fails to meet basic hygiene and safety standards.
The protesters demanded that health department officials conduct regular inspections of hotels and food stalls to ensure compliance with food safety norms and maintain quality standards.
Demand for accountability and penalties
Expressing strong displeasure, the activists accused the concerned authorities of neglecting their duties. They claimed that no department was taking cognisance of repeated violations and urged officials to impose heavy fines on establishments found using banned substances.
The protesters also demanded strict disciplinary action against health officials for failing to curb unsafe practices, warning that continued negligence could endanger public health.
Protest leadership
The demonstration was led by NSUI Shivamogga city president Ravikumar, vice-president Aditya, and Subhan, along with several party activists. They warned that the agitation would be intensified if immediate steps were not taken to ensure food safety in the city.
