In a poignant loss for the Tyavarekoppa zoo-cum-safari in Shivamogga, Arya, a 19-year-old male lion, passed away on Monday due to multiple organ failure. Arya had been experiencing a decline in health over the past two weeks, with complications from multiple organ disorders. Despite the dedicated care from Veterinary Officer Murali Manohar, who had been treating Arya at the zoo’s clinic, the lion’s condition worsened.
Arya was brought to Shivamogga from Mysuru zoo in 2008 and was known for being the oldest lion in the Shivamogga zoo. The zoo’s Executive Director, Amarakshara, reported that Arya had stopped eating a week prior to his death and was unresponsive to treatment, largely due to his advanced age.
Lions typically have a lifespan of 12 to 13 years in the wild, but Arya exceeded this average by living a full 19 years, thanks to the care and attention he received at the zoo. His passing marks the end of an era for the Tyavarekoppa zoo-cum-safari, which had cherished him as a prominent member of its animal family.
Arya’s death is a significant loss to the zoo and its visitors, who will remember him for his long life and the care he received throughout his years in captivity.
