A Bengaluru woman, known as Dr. Phoenix on social media, has raised serious concerns after alleging that a rank holder from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) demanded a staggering dowry of ₹50 crore. This incident brings to light the ongoing issue of dowry practices in India, which, despite being illegal, remain deeply entrenched in societal norms.

The Alarming Demand

Dr. Phoenix revealed that her friend, a fellow doctor pursuing an MD in Anesthesia and specializing in liver transplant anesthesia, was in discussions for marriage with the individual who achieved Rank 1 in the AIIMS entrance for MCh in Urology. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she expressed her shock at the demand, questioning the character of someone who would require such an amount from a fellow professional.

“So AIIMS rank 1 Uro MCh is asking 50 crores dowry from my friend… Have some shame will you,” she wrote, emphasizing the absurdity of the situation and the pressure it places on her friend’s family, who are now confronted with potentially depleting their entire life savings.

Emotional Toll on Families

Dr. Phoenix mentioned that her friend had been in tears over the situation, with her parents resigning themselves to the expectation that marrying into the Telugu community would come with a hefty dowry. She highlighted the additional burden of having a younger sister, suggesting that the cycle of dowry expectations would continue.

The story sparked a wave of responses on social media, with many users sharing similar experiences and expressing outrage at the demands being made by the doctor. Comments ranged from condemning the individual for his lack of integrity to critiques of the societal pressures that sustain such practices.

“This is nauseating to read. The guy is a low life,” said one user, while another pointed out, “If true, demanding a 50 crore ‘dowry’ reflects a failure of society and medicine.”

Mixed Reactions

While many condemned the dowry demand, some users raised doubts about the authenticity of the claims. Others attempted to justify the situation by comparing it to instances of reverse dowry, highlighting that pressures exist on both sides regarding marital expectations.

This incident underscores the persistent issues related to dowry practices in India and the need for greater awareness and change in societal attitudes. As conversations continue, the hope is that such discussions will contribute to eradicating the dowry system and promoting a more equitable view of marriage.
