Popular playback singer Sonu Nigam has broken his silence following backlash from a recent musical event in Bengaluru, where a controversy arose over language demands. Taking to Instagram, the singer posted a video titled “just love”, addressing the situation and expressing his views.
In the video, Nigam explained that during his performance, a small group of four to five individuals began aggressively insisting that he sing in Kannada. “These weren’t requests—they were threats,” he clarified. The rest of the audience attempted to intervene and maintain order, urging the disruptive group to stop.
He added, “It was important to remind them that when an incident happened in Pahalgam involving humiliation, nobody asked about anyone’s language.” This remark, though cryptic, pointed to the irrelevance of language in moments of distress.
Affirming his fondness for the local community, Sonu said, “Kannadigas are warm, loving people whom I deeply respect. Please don’t judge an entire group based on the actions of a few.” He reiterated that the aggressiveness came only from a handful of attendees, which could happen anywhere.
Sonu also revealed that he had dedicated a full hour of his concert to Kannada songs. “The world gathers with love; we must stop those who spread hatred instantly. If hate is planted in a place meant for love, we’ll all suffer the consequences,” he concluded.
The event was held at East Point College of Engineering and Technology in Bengaluru.
