Singer Sonu Nigam recently found himself in the spotlight during a performance at East Point College, Bengaluru, after confronting a fan who aggressively insisted he sing in Kannada. A viral video captured the moment Sonu addressed the crowd, expressing both his deep love for Karnataka and his dismay at the rude demand.
In the video, Sonu calmly yet firmly said he’s always cherished performing in Kannada and holds Kannadigas in high regard. “The best songs I’ve sung in my life are Kannada songs,” he stated, adding that whenever he performs in Karnataka, he comes with immense respect and love.
However, he recounted how a young fan threatened him to sing only in Kannada. Sonu responded, “I’ve been singing Kannada songs since before he was born. It hurt to be threatened like that.” He linked this to the Pahalgam incident, implying that such attitudes are reflective of deeper disrespect.
He clarified that wherever he performs globally, even if only one Kannadiga is in the crowd, he ensures to sing a Kannada line or two to honour them. “That’s how much I respect you,” he added. But he urged fans to maintain civility and mutual respect, stating that aggression is never the answer.
With a career spanning multiple languages, Sonu Nigam continues to be a versatile and respected figure in Indian music, reminding fans that love for culture should never turn into hostility.
