School is our second home and teachers are our second mothers. But what is also true is the reverse of this where home is the first school and our parents are our first teachers.
Now, how good this school is only going to depend on the facilities, and this does not mean a home with things that are expensive.
For at the end of the day, it is not so much the walls, flooring and furniture that matter. True, they play a role in making the learning environment more comfortable.
But like any good school, what a good home needs is a laboratory, the one place in the school where learning is the most effective. A geography class wouldn’t be so effective without a good map, and a history class would be boring without some good visuals in the form of videos.
And in the school called home, parents play the role of all these facilities like the laboratory and the atlas and the many videos.
You still have the choice to remain as the boring teacher with a stick before the blackboard, but you can be sure that the only thing you’ll get from this is a bunch of bored and fearful kids, who are not going to receive any learning.
Kids don’t look forward to lectures from you. Rather what they want is to watch you, observe what you do and then try and imitate you. And this is where a parent becomes a child’s first laboratory in the first school called home, which can bring about the best form of learning.
Let them see you handle relationship and conflicts wisely, always engaged in something and being productive with the right things, and you will see the kinds of students you raised all thanks to this effective home laboratory.
A child who grows up watching his parents killing time on his phone or binge watching movies will only become a couch potato and a movie buff himself from the example he seems to be getting.
A child watching his parents argue over trivial things will only end up using bad words himself, words that the teachers in his first school taught him.
So parents out there, look before you leap, and watch what you say, for again, a school does not strict teachers before a blackboard as it needs the right facilities.
